About This Role
Ryerson Utilities is seeking a versatile HDD Directional Drill Locator / Laborer to support FTTH and fiber construction projects. This hybrid role is ideal for someone with experience in directional drilling support, locating, and general fiber construction who thrives in a hands-on field environment.
You'll work closely with a dedicated drill crew, serving as the Locator or Laborer during HDD operations while also assisting with labor duties such as potholing, fiber installation, and job site support. This is a long-term opportunity with steady local work, a safety-first culture, and room to grow within the company.
What You'll Do
- Serve as the Directional Drill Locator for HDD operations, working directly with the HDD Operator
- Track and locate drill heads to ensure accurate bore paths, depth, and utility avoidance
- Read and interpret utility locates, prints, maps, and as-built drawings
- Communicate bore progress, depth changes, and hazards in real time
- Assist with potholing, hand digging, trenching, and remediation
- Support fiber and conduit installation, including pulling fiber
- Set hand holes, vaults, pedestals, and enclosures
- Load, unload, transport, and organize tools, materials, and equipment
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site
- Follow all OSHA and company safety policies
- Complete required daily documentation and reports
What We're Looking For
- 1–3+ years of experience in FTTH, fiber optic, telecom construction, or HDD support
- HDD locating experience preferred (urban environments a plus)
- Familiarity with underground utilities and job site safety
- Ability to read and understand maps, drawings, and construction plans
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail
- Team-oriented, dependable, and safety-focused
- Mechanical aptitude is a plus
Required/Preferred Qualifications
- Valid Driver's License (required)
- CDL Class A (preferred)
- OSHA 10 Certification (preferred)
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- Experience with Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch HDD equipment (preferred)
Physical Demands
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Walk job sites and track bore paths for extended periods
- Bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces
- Lift up to 50–75 lbs
- Travel locally as required
